The "idea" of HaloNet.Net is to bring together various Halo Custom Edition and PC related resources, and serve them all under the halonet.net domain. If you need a FQDN for your server, just ask in our Discord or DM me. I have plenty of Cloudflare resources, with geographically diverse origins. This infrastructure supports HAC2, HSE®, and various other Halo CE related services.
HAC2 is actively supported there, too.
HaloNet.Net members can apply for dedicated hostnames for their Halo servers.
New features are usually documented here: http://wiki.halonet.net/index.php/HAC2/Post-Install-HAC2

A note about releases:

HAC2 release channels are 'alpha', 'beta', and 'stable' (default). The release channel is set in the HAC2.ini at My Games->Halo CE->HAC2

You can jump between releases at will. The 'test' release is straight out of my latest Visual Studio build. Do not use this unless directed to.

A new release for any of the channels will be announced inline in the Release Notes below. If no release is mentioned, it is still in 'test'.

----

'''Known issues'''

If you put hac.dll in your main Halo install folder, it will not update. However, HAC2 might tell you to press F1 to update every time you start Halo.

The map download code may be flagged as malware. It uses the happyhttp library. I am working to remove that old code, replacing it with WinHTTP as I have done in the loader.

----

'''2026/02/07''' - 2.5.0.4 - '''RELEASED TO 'alpha' channel'''

----

'''2026/02/07''' - 2.5.0.4 - Gravity change fixes.

Joining an HSE (or SAPP) server with gravity modified, gravity was not reset when joining a different server. (HSE now sets client gravity on join, not just change at the console).

----
'''2026/01/21''' - 2.5.0.3 - '''test''' release

TBA

----
'''2026/01/18''' - 2.5.0.2 - released to alpha on 2026/01/21

Added display_time command to set chat timeout. Stock is 7 seconds. The preference display_time itself existed since around 2018.

----

'''2026/01/14''' - 2.5.0.1 - '''In testing'''

Added map_dir preference and console command so map download directory can be moved.

Cleaning up comments, added version and console fade help on startup somewhere around 2.4.0.0 (never went past testing)

----

'''2024/05/13''' - 2.3.3.1 - '''In testing''' - released in '''alpha''' channel

Added "go" command to go to a bookmark number.

Added LAN and Internet mode console messages in green. By default, it's Internet mode. If a server switches modes, HAC2 will report it on join.

'''Loader''' (halonet_addons.dll) has been updated to support HTTPS for updates. Will release into beta soon.

----

'''2022/03/12''' - 2.3.2.1 - '''Released in alpha channel''' (forgot to change the version, this was an emergency release)

Added master_server console command and preferences setting. Halonet.net has in the past, and will soon again provide a secondary gamespy server at '''gamespy.halonet.net''' - this can replace both s1.master.hosthpc.com and s1.ms01.hosthpc.com.

Expanded bookmark colors. White for empty, green for w/players, yellow for full, red for offline.

Bookmarks are now kept in preferences.ini - On first startup, the bookmarks.hac file is read and saved as entries in the preferences file. Once there, the original bookmarks file is no longer used. However, a backup should be taken. If reverting version back to an earlier version, it will ignore preferences so any changes are not carried backward.

----

'''2021/06/23''' - 2.3.2.1

Fixed Windows 10 exit issue - Halo calls TerminateProcess on itself before cleaning up. Which, go figure, kills off the entire thing abruptly.
Bookmarks are now color-coded - red-offline, cyan-online but no players, green-online w/players, yellow online but full.
Bookmarks are being moved to preferences.ini - this version only copies them to preferences.ini - it does not YET use preferences.ini bookmarks.

----

'''2019/12/16''' - 2.3.1.1

Poly count fix from Devieth.
32-bit texture fix from 002/Kavawuvi. '''Added post-alpha of 2.3.1.1''' - Fix for uncompressed WAV files from Vaporeon

----

'''2019/07/02'''

Fixed optic usage output in the console.
Removed optic_pack preference value when "optic unload" command is used. Otherwise, there was no way to permanently disable optic packs without editing preferences.ini manually.

----

Various bugs and other things fixed that you wouldn't know about right away:

- Large maps, larger than somewhere around the 200MB mark, caused Halo to leave open file descriptors, causing a memory leak. After discussing this with 002/Kaviwuvi's help, he came up with a quick fix that involved loading the map in larger chunks than stock. This affected both the server and the client, and the client in self-hosting mode. Not sure if this affects SAPP.

- Some NetEvents issues were fixed. Even when not connected to a server, after aborting a connection, NetEvents would try to communicate with the server, causing Halo to crash. Fix was to check if "current map" was UI, and if so, don't bother. NetEvents is a protocol made by sehe for SAPP - and SAPP can communicate in some ways with the new HAC2 - setting "Time Remaining" in the score screen, for example.

- custom_chat and classic_chat can no longer be enabled/disabled while in-game. Stock halo chat text would freeze on-screen if one of these custom chat types were enabled.

- There is a Bugzilla instance with (as of right now) about 10 or 15 bugs/enhancements to be fixed or implemented. These will be taken care of as time permits.

The map download code may be flagged as malware. It uses the happyhttp library. I am working to remove that old code, replacing it with WinHTTP as I have done in the loader.

----

'''2026/02/03''' - 2.5.0.4 - Gravity change fixes.

Joining a HAC2 (or SAPP) server with gravity modified, gravity was not reset when joining a different server.

Various other articles exist for the basics of HAC2 configuration. That information will be added here at a later date. For now, see the new features below.

'''HAC2 - new features'''

Since late 2018, I have added a few new features to HAC2. These include:

----

'''Bookmarks in Preferences'''. Bookmarks have been moved to the preferences file. If the preferences do not exist on startup, bookmarks are read from the bookmarks.hac file, and the preferences are then populated. The bookmarks.hac file is never used after that. The preference bookmark_00 is reserved for the Last server bookmark. If all bookmark preferences are removed, hac2 will reread the bookmarks.hac file.

----

'''Bookmarks in color'''. Bookmarks are colored red for offline, green with players, yellow when full, and white/grey for empty.

----

'''Last server bookmark.''' The last server you joined will be bookmarked as Alt-L.

----

'''FQDN support for bookmarks'''. This allows a full domain name to be stored in bookmarks for your server. There is a 32-character limit. If you want to add a domain name to your SAPP server, add "query_add fqdn <servername>" to the init.txt. For example:

query_add fqdn halosrv1.halonet.net

In HSE®, add: se_hostname <fqdn> to the init.txt

----

'''discord''' command - enable/disable Discord support. This can be enabled/disabled at any time and is saved in the preferences.

'''Discord Rich Presence support'''. This was added by Btcc22, but I have made enhancements to it. I added the ability to detect a "private" server, so that the specifics are not broadcast to Discord. HSE® respects the sv_public setting and needs no further configuration. For SAPP, add "query_add private 1" to your init.txt

Also, "special" characters that are less than decimal 32 (non printing) are removed before the server name is sent to Discord. ^A (SOH, decimal 1) is commonly used to position a server up the lobby list sorted by server name.

----

'''Time remaining in the F1 screen'''. This was added by Btcc22/Chaosvex. This works with HSE® as well as the latest version of SAPP. No further configuration necessary.

----

'''Classic chat'''. This mimics the classic Halo chat but uses Btcc22's custom chat code. Use the console command "classic_chat 1" to turn it on when not connected to a server. Note: custom_chat and classic_chat can no longer be enabled/disabled while in-game. Stock halo chat text would freeze on-screen if one of these custom chat types were enabled.

----

'''chat_font''' command. Sets the font used by custom or classic chat. For example: chat_font "Lucida Console"

----

'''font_size''' command. Use this to set the font size. Default is around 24. This was done by Btcc22, but I include it here because of the classic chat and other chat settings I added.

----

'''chat_lines''' or '''line_limit''' command. Sets the number of lines of custom or classic chat on the screen. The default is 6.

----

'''debug''' command. Turns on certain debug output that may be helpful for debugging issues. This sets the preference "debug_output" in preferences.ini - You can edit the preferences file directly if necessary.

----

'''save''' command. Forces a preferences save. This is a diagnostic for people having issues with Windows 10 not saving preferences.

----

More coming as time permits.

----
'''Known issues'''

If you put hac.dll in your main Halo install folder, it will not update, and HAC2 might tell you to press F1 to update every time you start Halo.

The map download code may be flagged as malware. It uses the happyhttp library. I am working to remove that old code and replace it with WinHTTP as I have done in the loader.

----
'''2026/01/18''' - 2.5.0.2 - '''In testing'''

----

'''HAC2 release notes'''

Besides the new features discussed here: http://wiki.halonet.net/index.php/HAC2/Post-Install-HAC2

This is a placeholder for now.

HSE® is a Halo Custom Edition dedicated server extension. It is ONLY for Halo Custom Edition.

Paired with a central database called HNET, HSE provides a consistent player experience across multiple servers. Inter-server chat is a reality. Communications between HNET and HSE is encrypted using my own RSA/AES256 key-exchange scheme, and that encryption is completely outside any HTTPS or other protocols. This means all HSE/HNET traffic is encrypted end-to-end even through Cloudflare.

Using HAC2, or other compatible extensions, players can enjoy an even better gaming experience.

'''At this time, HSE administration requires HNET.''' An HNET server will be provided, either private, or shared, and it will be necessary that your servers use static IP addresses. If you want to run your own HNET database instance, and you can wrangle Apache, PHP and MYSQL, I will gladly provide database creation scripts and all data necessary to launch your servers and administer them.

---

License: HSE is licensed on an as-needed basis. HSE source code, HNET database/php/html, and all other code provided can NOT be redistributed. It is solely owned by KWCI. If changes are made, please submit them to me if you want them incorporated into the main stream build.

Support and warranty: No warranty is implied. If you are cyber-attacked, and HSE is broken into, that's your problem, not mine. I reserve the right to block access to HNET or other HaloNet.Net services at any time due to security or other concerns.

Release notes for 0.9-158

ASB/KD (see se_help kd and se_help asb for full list)

kd enable/disable/0/1/y/n - default ON - KD monitoring, .asb command works, NO hit modifications
asb enable/disable - default OFF - enable actual hit/miss
asb_public enable/disable - make announcements public
asb_misses enable/disable - enable/disable miss stats for each missed hit (only to SERVER ADMINS)

The min/max defaults are:

--

Some anticheat setting commands have been shortened (see se_help ac_ for full list):

One that we used recently is for wall fire angle, and the command is much shorter:
ac_wf_angle <angle>

--

Smoooth bot detection:

ac_smooth_steps <steps> - default 20 - how many steps in a smooth motion. Set to a high number to stop entirely.
ac_smooth_range <percentage> - default .05 - A smooth motion "step" within 5% of the previous "step" is a "smooth motion".

These might need to be tuned, I'm able to set it off when I'm trying to make it happen.

--

Chat vs. console output - global setting has existed for years, using it in HNET servers in Germany. se_client_console enable/disable (default is enabled)

USERS CAN NOW CHANGE THIS INDIVIDUALLY:

.chat 0/1 - Sets output to chat - if set to 0/n/disable, HSE console output goes to console. set to 1, goes to chat.
.console 0/1 - opposite of .chat command. .console 0 sends it to chat. .console 1 sends it to console.

IF LOGGED INTO HNET:

This value will persist, and be set each time you login to HNET.

--

TEAM CHANGE ON DEATH:

Almost all team changes are now on-death, or within one minute (tunable with the tcod_max_wait command available in the next build)

These downloads are for Windows versions of Halo Combat Evolved and Custom Edition and various other related tools and projects. There is no attempt to include XBOX or other platforms. This is Windows PC only.

Halo Custom Edition is an add-on to Combat Evolved, and requires that you own a licensed copy of Combat Evolved, and will only install with a Product Key.

--

According to recent 2024 DMCA exemptions, the original Halo Combat Evolved for PC no longer functions in multiplayer. Halo Custom Edition is an add-on that requires a licensed copy of Combat Evolved. This no longer functions either, and in fact is not available for download from official channels. Microsoft does nothing to fix this. Additionally, a major reason these games were/are popular is because they are multi-player.

With that in mind, HaloNet.Net and a part of the larger Custom Edition community are providing fixes for these games. These are provided as official patches, but also broad client and server modifications by members of the Halo CE community. While these modifications bring a slew of new features, they also provide critical fixes for operational and security issues, without which the game no longer functions.

Some of those fixes are detailed below:

- Multiplayer fixes: The original gamespy master server is no longer, and has been moved elsewhere. The hostname and IP changed, and this breaks multiplayer in all versions below Custom Edition 1.10 - In the event of another master server move, both client and server modifications have been made to allow customization of the master server FQDN.

- Operating system fixes/requirements: Windows 10+ is supported, and UAC and other changes are not necessary. Various fixes require at least Windows 7. This moves the operating system support timeline a decade or more. This is unavoidable as modern IDEs no longer support compatibility pre-Windows 7.

- Dedicated server patches and enhancements: Various DDOS and security vulnerabilities have been patched and in fact are required to circumvent being used as a UDP reflector. Running an unpatched server is both dangerous to yourself and potentially harmful to others in this community.

- Physical CD requirements are removed by later patches to Custom Edition. This is a good thing, as physical CDs are starting to rot as they near the end of their lifespan. Copies of original CD images will be provided as well, so that the official patches can be applied by the end-user. Fully updated packages will also be available, that are plug-and-play but still require a product key to install.

'''HAC2 client-side Halo CE Custom Edition and PC Combat Evolved Extension''' -

This extension supports server bookmarks, map downloads, bug fixes, automatic updates, and a lot of other modifications to the basic Halo client.

----

Installation is easy, with the NSIS installer to copy halonet_addons.dll into the Halo controls folder.

Note: There are two versions of HAC2. The old version of HAC2, version 2.2.0.9a (01/08/16) is the original HAC2. It is available here: [http://client.haloanticheat.com/release.zip] - for posterity only.

After the original 2.2 became popular, Btcc22 (Chaosvex) updated the code with Discord support, SAPP netevents, and some other small changes. The latest HAC2 code that he released is here: [https://github.com/Chaosvex/HAC2]

Using that code, I started building 2.3+, and have greatly expanded it. See the install instructions below, and the release notes for more information. Access to the new code is by request only.

----

It is NOT my intention to continue supporting Windows XP for long. There are some issues with Windows XP, especially when updating the loader. If you have issues, you can find HAC2_loader_install.exe in the Downloads folder in Documents\My Games\HAC2 and run it from there.

[https://halonet.net/wiki/index.php/HAC2/Installation HAC2_loader_installer instructions]
'''HAC2 release notes'''

[https://halonet.net/wiki/index.php/HAC2/Release-Notes HAC2 release notes]

NOTE: No attempt is made to modify the basic "stock" game play. Descope, and other "fixes" are not, and will not, be enabled by default. If anything of this nature is ever implemented, it will only be available if the server requests it. Anything that gives a single client advantage over the others is simply not allowed, without the server enabling it.

Certain activities and identifying (anonymous) identifiers are reported by HAC2 to the server. This support is only included in HSE® but can be implemented with SAPP/LUA if there is a need.

Any reference to "HAC2" here implies the "new" HAC2, version 2.3+, based on halonet.net. The "old" HAC2 is still supported, and based on haloanticheat.com - the old HAC2 may update at some point after extensive testing.

I moved away from loader.dll as it was being flagged as malware. The NSIS installer tries to remove the old loader, and any previous versions of HAC2. Support is built into HAC2 so that if the loader itself needs an update, the Halo client will ask if you want to install it.

As always, any questions, please go to the HaloNet.Net discord.
